An Italian adventure of a lifetime! In June 2012 Sue was invited to teach her Fabric Collage Skills Workshop at the Abruzzo School of Creative Art in Italy. A group of enthusiastic artists joined her for 5 crazy creative days!
My workshop, Landscapes of Italy, was held over 5 days from June 13th to June 19th 2012. My classes both motivated and challenged the artists who joined her, while the Abruzzo landscape will inspired all of their work. The region has been largely cut off from the rest of Italy by its high rugged mountains, so the pace of life is still slow and it has many picturesque hilltop settlements to explore. I am passionate about teaching my original collage technique, which I also call “painting with fabrics”, as the end result is closer to a painting than a quilt. And I encourage both creativity and individuality in my classes. Over the week participants learnt many new ways to use fabric such as, mono printing, fraying silks, layering sheers, and scrunching and gathering fabrics. Each day they created a sample piece for their folder based on one of the 5 elements of design – line, shape, tone, texture and glorious colour. All of the above new creative techniques were then used to create a fantastic fabric collage based on the surrounding landscape. Finally participants learnt free motion machine stitching to “draw” on their landscapes, as I demonstrated it to everyone. By the end of the week of hilarious fun students could take home a unique masterpiece they had created, and all felt confident to keep working creatively with fabric at home. Sadly the Abruzzo School of Creative Arts is no longer running, but there are many other creative pursuits available in the area, or come and meet me in Queenstown, New Zealand |
